An apparatus is provided to prevent over-run of a starter motor for vehicle by supplying or cutting off the drive power from an ignition switch to the starter motor when the drive power is supplied or cut off. An apparatus for preventing over-run of a starter motor for vehicle comprises a battery(202) providing drive power, a starter motor(204) rotating by the drive power, an ignition switch(206) delivering the drive power to the starter motor, a start sensing unit(208) sensing the starting of the engine according to the rotation of the starter motor, a controller(214) which is provided with the drive power depending on the engine starting, and an on/off switching unit(210) which switches on/off the drive power supplied to the starter motor when the controller supplies or blocks the drive power.
