An upright-cum-canister type vacuum cleaner is provided to clean carpet in the best condition in both the upright and canister modes by applying power to the drive motor to actuate the brush unit. An upright-cum-canister type vacuum cleaner comprises a suction unit, a main body(10), an extension pipe(40), a hose(20), and a handle(30). The suction unit, including a drum brush and a drive motor inside, inhales dust on the floor. The main body separates and collects dust from the inhaled air, and can be switched between upright type and canister type depending on the mounting of the extension pipe. The extension pipe is connected to the suction unit. The hose is detachably connected to the main body. The handle connects the extension pipe and the hose.
