An electronic device 20 for underwater use comprising a housing, a display 30, an accelerometer 24 and a controller 22,26 that receives signals from the accelerometer 24, determines the user interaction event based on the signals and performs an operation in response to the event. The user interaction event may comprise the user tapping the housing and the accelerometer 24 may be a three-axis accelerometer. A finger tap in a first direction may result in performance of a first operation and a tap in a second direction may result in a second different operation being performed. The operation may comprise navigation of the display screen 30 and may cause a display change upon power-up, movement of a cursor in a menu and selection of a menu option. The controller may consist of two separate controllers, the first 26 for receiving the signals from the accelerometer 24, detecting the user interaction event and signalling to the second controller 22 which then performs the operation. The device may comprise a pressure sensor 28 for determining underwater depth for displaying on the screen 30. The fill material within the housing may provide a hermetic seal and the material may comprise epoxy that may be semi-rigid when cured. A method of controlling the device 20 is also disclosed. The device 20 is used as a wrist mounted dive computer for scuba diving. |
