720,214. Pneumatic tyres. WINGFOOT CORPORATION. May 19, 1952 [Feb. 5, 1952], No. 12586/52. Class 144 (2). A tubeless pneumatic tyre comprises an ordinary outer cover and a separate diaphragm spanning the space between the tyre-beads and the wheel-rim to constitute the air-chamber, the edges of the diaphragm terminating in thickened portions adapted to lie adjacent the outer edges of the rim-flanges. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the diaphragm 6, formed of butyl or like impermeable rubber and having edge portions 13 reinforced by spring wire cores, is combined with a multi-ply reinforced fabric diaphragm 7 which, with the rim 2, forms a load-supporting air-chamber 17 in the event of puncture of the diaphragm'6. As shown, the latter is fitted with a puncture-sealing layer 20. The diaphragm 7 is provided with a bleed-hole 19 to ensure slow seepage of air from the chamber 17 on collapse of the chamber 18. At least one ply of the diaphragm 7 extends into the rim-seating portions of the diaphragm 6. In alternative arrangements the inner diaphragm 7 is separate from the outer diaphragm 6 or is omitted. To reduce the thickness of the diaphragm 7 at the rim engaging portions the fabric plies end at the tyre bead toe and are sandwiched over a rubberized nylon or like insert which extends to the diaphragm edges. |
