A portable terminal and a character input method equipped with a touch screen realizing a copy/pates function are provided to input a character key such as a character used repeatedly by copying the copied character, a character string or an image. A storage(140) comprises a clipboard(145) storing character according to the detected drag. If the drag is sensed through a touch screen, a controller(130) determines whether the character on the sensed region exists in a typing mode. If the character indicated in an area which the drag is sensed, the controller determines whether the touch is sensed through the touch screen. If the touch is sensed, the controller stores the indicated character in the clip board.
