PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the durability of a piston by suppressing the temperature rise of the piston. SOLUTION: An internal combustion engine includes the piston 60 formed to have the different heat insulating performance of a crown surface 61 according to a crown surface part; and a combustion chamber divided by the piston, a cylinder head, and a cylinder block, and having an area X having a large distance between a crown surface peripheral edge portion of the piston 60 and n area Y having a small distance. In the piston 60, the heat insulating performance of the crown surface 61 in the area X of the combustion chamber is higher than the heat insulating performance of the crown surface 61 in the area Y of the combustion chamber.
