PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent an image defect caused by adhesion of a foreign matter to a surface of an image carrier without causing increase in toner consumption. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus is equipped with photoreceptors 3Y, 3M, 3C and 3K for carrying a toner image on their surfaces, a driving motor for driving the photoreceptors, and cleaners 7Y, 7M, 7C and 7K for cleaning the surfaces of the photoreceptors according as the photoreceptors are driven. The image forming apparatus is equipped with a torque variation detection means for detecting a variation amount of driving torque of the photoreceptor, and a control means for performing control of driving start time that image forming operation is inhibited until the variation amount of the driving torque of the photoreceptor becomes equal to or under a predetermined value set in advance while continuing the driving of the photoreceptor when starting the driving of the photoreceptor.
