PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the occurrence rate of faults and to suppress noise during sewing. SOLUTION: The single needle switching device 1 includes a switching lever 2, a switching plate 5, a slider 81, a clutch lever for interrupting the connection of a needle bar and a sewing machine main shaft by being in contact with the slider when the needle bar is vertically moved, and a release pin provided at a position different from the clutch lever, for connecting left and right needle bars and the sewing machine main shaft by being in contact with the slider when the needle bar is vertically moved. The switching lever is operated to switch to a position at which the slider abuts on the clutch lever or a position at which the slider abuts on the release pin and a one-needle sewing state or a two-needle sewing state is attained. The single needle switching device includes a release lever mechanism 11 for supporting the switching lever so as to be at three positions of the one-needle sewing state wherein the slider abuts on the clutch lever, the two-needle sewing state wherein the slider abuts on the release pin, and a neutral state wherein the slider is not abutted to the clutch lever and the release pin.
