PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten the time required to correct a three-dimensional shape model for meeting design specifications, by automatically generating from a schematic shape a three-dimensional CAD model for shape optimization in which local dimensions and members can be changed when necessary and applying the generated three-dimensional CAD model as an initial shape to shape optimization calculations. SOLUTION: A three-dimensional shape optimization apparatus for determining types and dimensions of parts constructing a three-dimensional CAD model includes a means for inputting a schematic shape, a means for generating and displaying a three-dimensional CAD model from the schematic shape and a means for specifying members that need reinforcing.
