PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a failure determining device capable of more accurately determining a failure of a variable valve system due to mechanical malfunction. SOLUTION: In the case wherein a lift change rate LH expressing a change rate of the maximum lift quantity is a determination valueαor less when the maximum lift quantity of an intake valve is being reduced and opening of a throttle valve is being reduced (S110: YES), a temporary determination that there is a failure in a variable valve system is done. Thereafter, a determination whether the intake pressure PM reaches a regulation value P1 or not is done (S120), and in the case wherein the intake pressure PM is less than the regulation pressure P1 (S120:NO), a determination that the temporary determination, which determines that there is a failure in the variable valve system, is right is done (S140).
