PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thickener without reducing viscosity even in an aqueous salt solution and excellent in use feeling, and a cosmetic material containing the thickener. SOLUTION: The thickener containing 1 or more kinds selected from a poly-γ-L-glutamic acid, a poly-γ-L-glutamate salt, a cross-linked poly-γ-L-glutamic acid and a cross linked poly-γ-L-glutamate salt, and the cosmetic material containing the thickener are provided.
