The invention provides a system for raising the temperature of an engine and for heating a passenger compartment of a motor vehicle comprising a supercharged engine (1), an exhaust line for the exhaust gases and a duct (10) for the possible recirculation of the low-pressure exhaust gases to the inlet of the compressor (3) of the line which admits air to the engine, and a heat exchanger (12) on the recirculation path (10). According to the invention, the system comprises a bypass duct (14) connecting a second tapping point (15) upstream of the first tapping point (11) of the recirculation circuit in the exhaust line to the recirculation duct (10) downstream of the heat exchanger (12), and a valve device (16, 17) for optionally circulating the exhaust gases towards the inlet of the compressor by passing either through the exchanger (12) or through the bypass duct (14) and/or for circulating the exhaust gases towards the outlet of the exhaust line by passing through the bypass duct (14) and the exchanger (12). The invention also provides a method for regulating the temperature of the engine and/or the passenger compartment of a motor vehicle.
