<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device, ensuring visibility regardless of the direction of a screen even when a user views the screen with polarizing sunglasses. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device includes: a liquid crystal cell LC; a first polarizer P located on the viewing side of the liquid crystal cell; and an optical element R located on the viewing side of the polarizer; the optical element R converting and emitting a straight polarized light entering from the liquid crystal cell LC through the first polarizer P as a circularly polarized light. The optical element R has a front retardation Re at wavelength 550 nm in the range of from 100 to 180 nm and a refractive index ellipsoid showing the relation of nx>ny≥nz or nx≥nz>ny, and is disposed so that the angle formed by the in-plane delay axial direction and the absorption axis of the first polarizer P ranges from 40 to 50°. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT |
