PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an evanescent light source capable of lighting in a relatively wide range with less interference and less noise components. SOLUTION: The evanescent light source uses light which is obtained by exciting a phosphor closely contacting a plate-like transparent body with exciting light. A portion thereof which the phosphor 102 closely contacts is an incident plane for light that the phosphor 102 emits, and the surface of any other portion than the incident plane portion is an output plane for evanescent light.
