PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fullerene derivative maintaining high solubility in a polar organic solvent such as a ketone and an ester, having a low extinction coefficient because of having a low absorptivity of a light having 193 nm wavelength, and having a high refractive index, to provide a solution containing the fullerene derivative, and to provide a membrane of the fullerene derivative. SOLUTION: The fullerene derivative is prepared by introducing a proper amount of one or more kinds of organic groups selected from the group consisting of an organic group containing an alicyclic hydrocarbon group, and an organic group containing a hydrocarbon group containing a sulfur atom to a hydroxy group of an aromatic hydrocarbon compound having the hydroxy group as an additional substituent.
