PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem of conventional power supply units using fuel cells, in which rapidly increased power cannot be supplied to a portable device, for example, when taking a picture with a camera using the power supply unit by firing a flash. SOLUTION: In the power supply apparatus 10, the output is switched by a charge/cell-output switching circuit 35 and the patterns of usage of a portable device are monitored by a monitoring circuit 36. When fluctuations in the amount of power required for the portable device are small, the power generated by a fuel cell 31 is supplied to the portable device. When fluctuations in the amount of power required for the portable device are great, the power output from a secondary cell 12 is supplied to the portable device. Accordingly, the power supply apparatus 10 using the compact fuel cell 31 capable of coping with huge fluctuations in the amount of power required for the portable device is provided by combining the fuel cell 31 with the secondary cell 12.
