PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer capable of sucking recording paper with strong force to a platen while ensuring the flatness of recording paper in a printing position. SOLUTION: The surface 8a of the platen 8 of a roll paper printer 1 is partitioned by vertical ribs 31 into a plurality of compartments 32 including first compartments 51 and second compartments 52, the aperture area of each of which is two times that of each of the first compartments 51. The first and second compartments 51 and 52 are arranged alternately in the width direction of the platen. Each second compartment 52 is partitioned by a sidewise rib 55 into smaller compartments 52a and 52b, the aperture area of each of which is identical to that of each of the first compartments 51. Suction holes 33 are formed in the bottoms 32a of the first compartment 51 and smaller compartments 52a and 52b. Accordingly, recording paper 12a on the platen can be sucked with uniform suction force and, even when narrow recording paper is conveyed, both side edges of the narrow recording paper are prevented from falling into any compartment.
