PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fuel injection controller capable of learning an appropriate pilot injection quantity based on the variation in the ignition timing of the main injection and a fuel injection system using it. SOLUTION: In the case a pilot injection is executed prior to a main injection, the ignition timing of the main injection is changed according to increase or reduction of the pilot injection quantity and the level of the fuel cetane number. Either in the case the fuel cetane number shown by the solid line 310 is high or in the case the fuel cetane number shown by the dot line 320 is low, the variation in the ignition timing is made smaller according to increase of the pilot injection quantity, and the variation in the ignition timing is made larger according to reduction of the pilot injection quantity. Black dots 312, 322 show an optimum pilot injection quantity at the boundary to have the variation in the ignition timing or the ignition delay time in the case of increase or reduction of the pilot injection quantity in a predetermined range without excess or shortage of the pilot injection quantity regardless of the level of the fuel cetane number.
