PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably press and release a pair of press-contacting members for conveying a sheet between them against each other and from being pressed against each other, and to automatically pressing them against each other at the start of use with inexpensive constitution. SOLUTION: A sheet conveying apparatus includes a press-contacting releasing mechanism and a press-contacting return mechanism. The press-contacting releasing mechanism releases the pair of press-contacting members from being pressed against each other by retracting at least one of the press-contacting members as wedgelike press-contacting release members 43L and 43R provided on a rotary member 40 enters between the pair of press-contacting members 30 and 50 when the rotary member 40 is manually rotated on a pivot 41 to move the press-contacting release members 43L and 43R from standby positions to press-contacting release positions. The press-contacting return mechanism puts the pair of press-contacting members back into a press-contacting state by returning the press-contacting release members from the press-contact release positions to the standby positions by transmitting the driving force of a driving source such as a motor to the rotary member 40 through a return gear train D2 while rotating the press-contacting members by transmitting the driving force of the driving source at the start of use.
