PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a driving method of a plasma display panel improved in contrast. SOLUTION: The PDP having a protective layer where an electric field electron emitting material exposed on a surface coming into contact with a discharge space is driven as follows. An address stroke is carried out wherein while a selection potential is applied to a first row electrode of a row electrode pair to be addressed among row electrode pairs of the PDP, a non-selection potential is applied to a first row electrode of a row electrode pair not to be addressed. In this address stroke, the potential difference between the first row electrode and second row electrode when the selection potential is applied to the first row electrode is equal to or larger than a threshold for accelerating electron emission from the electric field emitting material.
