PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for forming a rare earth hydroxide coating, characterized in that it comprises heat-melting an organic complex of a rare earth element, forming a coating from a melt thereof, and bringing the coating into contact with steam in a molten state, thereby causing a substitution reaction of a ligand with a hydroxyl group. SOLUTION: According to the present invention, film formation of an organic complex using melting state and a hydrolysis method allow to reduce a burning temperature and thereby simply obtain a dense and smooth rare earth hydroxide coating. The resultant coating can be changed into an oxide coating by low temperature burning. Industrially, the utility value is very high. COPYRIGHT: (C)2009,JPO&INPIT
