PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To maintain an image as long as possible by driving an active matrix electrophoretic display. SOLUTION: When displaying the image, a controller starts writing operation, after reset operation (S1-1). When ending the writing operation, a high impedance process is performed as a charge maintaining process (S1-2). Charges accumulated on the common electrode and image electrode are made to remain without being drawn. As a result, in the dispersed medium of each pixel, an electric field is maintained by the remaining charge, and by the electric field, the position of the state of the electrophoresis particles attracted to each electrode is maintained. During the maintaining period, a controller waits a new writing instruction (S1-3). When a new instruction is received, the reset operation is performed (S1-4).
