PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine capable of suitably achieving both of reduction of oil dilution and restraint of smoke generation. SOLUTION: The internal combustion engine includes a combustion chamber 18, an intake port 19 and an exhaust port 20 communicating with the combustion chamber 18, an intake valve 21 and an exhaust valve 22 for respectively opening and closing the intake port 19 and the exhaust port 20, a fuel injection means 41 capable of split-injecting fuel to the combustion chamber 18 from an intake valve 21 side at multiple times, and an injection period setting means 51 for setting a fuel split-injection period of the fuel injection means 41 at a front half of an intake valve opening period for opening the intake valve 21 at a combustion chamber 18 side during a cold operation.
