A train end detecting switch (41) for detecting a train end having a contact closed when trains are not coupled is provided. One and the other ends of the switch (41) are respectively connected with transmission lines (17a, 17b) routed through the train at both ends of each vehicle or a group of vehicles. Insertion/non-insertion of a power source (DC voltage source (31) and current source (32)) between the transmission lines (17a and 17b) is switched over by changeover switches (33a, 33b) respectively inserted into the transmission lines (17a, 17b) in each vehicle. While the power source to be inserted into the transmission lines (17a, 17b) is controlled to be one of the train ends, voltages (V1, V2) at one and the other end of a resistor (34) inserted into at least one of the transmission lines (17a, 17b) are respectively measured. The train formation is recognized based on the measured voltages.
