PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processor capable of determining a gradation region based on an image signal to be input to selectively smooth an image signal and converting the smoothed image signal into an image signal with larger number of gradations than that of the image signal to be input, an image processing method, a program, and a display device.

SOLUTION: The image processor is provided with: a frequency component detection part which detects signals of a predetermined frequency band from N bits (N is a positive integer) of input image signals by every pixel; a detected value smoothing part which smoothes detection signals corresponding to the respective pixels detected by the frequency component detection part, respectively; a control signal generation part which generates control signals for specifying the gradation region by every pixel based on the smoothed detection signals; and a gradation number extension part which outputs N+k bits (k is a positive integer) of first output image signals in which the number of gradations of the input image signal is extended by the predetermined number or N+k bits of second output image signals in which the input image signal is smoothed and the number of gradations are extended by the predetermined number by every pixel based on the control signals.
