PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backlight device capable of suppressing noise sound caused by magnetostrictive vibration of a transformer, and to provide a display device using the same. SOLUTION: The backlight device has cold cathode fluorescent tubes (discharge tube) 20a-20h, and transformers connected to the cold cathode fluorescent tubes 20a-20h, and includes CCFL drive circuits (inverter circuits) T formed to drive the discharge tubes by using PWM light control, and a control part 30 to which an instruction signal from the outside is input, and which determines a duty ratio in the PWM light control to perform drive control of the CCFL drive circuit T by using the input instruction signal. The control part 30 changes at least one of the rising seed and the falling speed of a supply current supplied to the cold cathode fluorescent tubes 20a-20h from the transformer side to a slow speed.
