PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper separation device for the fixing unit of an image forming apparatus, in which image failure caused by scratch made by the contact of a paper separation member with a fixing member is prevented by making a gap between the surface of the fixing member and the leading end of the paper separation member almost constant all the time regardless of the temperature of the fixing member and, without increasing the space and cost due to the above process, energy saving and durability are improved. SOLUTION: The paper separation member is configured so as to be rotatable around a shaft fixed to the fixing unit frame or housing so that the leading end of this member is pressed toward the fixing roller. A positioning member fixed to the paper separation member or the positioning part of the paper separation member is disposed in contact with a rotating member provided separately from the paper separation member, which rotates in contact with the surface of the fixing roller while following it.
