The appliance has a control unit (10) for operating the appliance in different operating modes. A user interface (12) comprises an adjustment element (16) for adjusting an operating parameter. The control unit is designed to utilize an assigning function for assigning a value of the operating parameter to a condition of the adjustment element, and to determine the assigning function depending on the operating modes of the appliance. The adjustment element is formed as a sensor strip with sensor elements for detecting a contact point in a longitudinal direction of the sensor strip. An independent claim is also included for a method of operating a household appliance.
