A lanyard 10 for tethering a halyard 16 of a yacht to prevent it from striking a mast 18 comprises a cord of which the effective length is adjustable but which resists being extended once its effective length has been set. The lanyard has an eyelet 28 formed in, or attached to the cord at a fixed point along its length spaced from both its ends and a sleeve 22 fitted over the length of cord extending from the eyelet to one end of the cord. The latter end of the cord is looped a first time to make a second pass through the sleeve and being looped a second time to make a third pass through the sleeve after having been threaded through the eyelet. The sleeve is dimensioned such that it can slide freely over the three runs of cord passing through it but squeezes the runs of the cord together to prevent their relative movement and thereby set the effective length of the cord when the sleeve is slid over the eyelet. The lanyard may also be used as a guy rope for a tent, as a tether for a sun canopy or as a tether on a roof rack. |
