A CAD system for calculating the quantity and cost, a method for calculating the quantity and cost by using a CAD file and a recording medium which can be read by a computer in which a quantity and cost calculating CAD program is recorded are provided to automatically calculate the quantity of related materials when a designer prepares a CAD drawing file with material symbols. A quantity/cost calculating CAD(Computer-Aided Design) system comprises an editing unit(1), a symbol storing unit(2), a quantity calculating unit(3) and a cost calculating unit(4). The quantity calculating unit calculates the quantity corresponding to each material symbol from a completed CAD file, generates a quantity calculation DB and then outputs it. The cost calculating unit generates a cost DB by using the quantity calculation DB and then outputs it.
