Basic cleaning compositions using toxicologically-acceptable ingredients fo r cleaning various surfaces including surfaces used by infants are provided In particular the cleaning compositions are used to clean the surfaces of an infant clothing item, toy, diaper, or bib. The invention comprises a method for cleaning a surface used by an infant comprising contacting the surface with an aqueous cleaning solution having a pH of greater than 9.5 for a time sufficient to kill microorganisms on the surface. The aqueous cleaning solution comprises a fat ty acid, a salt of a fatty acid or a mixture thereof, phosphoric acid and water . Articles for applying the compositions by spraying are disclosed. Use of the compositions for cleaning/disinfecting/sanitizing are disclosed.
