A downfall prevention device is provided to suppress the large-size of a drive mechanism and enable a downfall prevention member arranged at a projected point to prevent a passenger from moving to a recessed point. A downfall prevention device(1) comprises a chassis(2), a downfall prevention member(6), a drive mechanism and a braking mechanism. The chassis is installed on a platform(100). The downfall prevention member moves between a projection point, which is protruded from the chassis and removes gap between a train and a platform, and a recessed point within the chassis retrograding from the projection point. The drive mechanism moves the downfall prevention member between the projection point and the recessed point. The drive mechanism comprises a driving rack, a driving pinion and a driving motor. The driving rack is installed at the downfall prevention member. The driving pinion engages with the driving rack. The drive motor rotates the driving pinion and moves the downfall prevention member with the driving rack between the projection point and the recessed point. When the downfall prevention member is in the projection point, the braking mechanism suppresses the movement of the downfall prevention member to the recessed point.
