PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic EL element having a configuration for compatibly improving light extraction efficiency and evading contrast decline by external light reflection. SOLUTION: In the organic EL element wherein an anode and a cathode comprise light transmissive electrodes, a light reflecting and absorbing layer 2 is formed on the outer side of one electrode 3, an interface formed by the electrode 3 and the light reflecting and absorbing layer 2 has reflectance≥1% and≤10% to the light emitting wavelength of the element and absorptance≥90% and≤99%, also an optical distance from the light emitting layer 4 of the element to the interface of the electrode 3 and the light reflecting and absorbing layer 2 is adjusted to be roughly 1/4 of the light emitting wavelength, and an optical distance from the light emitting layer 4 to the interface of an electrode 5 in a light extracting direction and an external world is adjusted to be roughly 1/16 or 1/4 of the light emitting wavelength.
