PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To secure durability against a target and exert good tightening speed. SOLUTION: An impact driver comprises a rotation speed detection means for a motor 2, a memory storing the optimum motor rotation speed for a wood screw and the optimum motor rotation speed for a bolt, and a control means for determining a rotation state of a head shaft 6 based on a pulsation cycle of the motor 2 measured by the rotation speed detection means to control the rotation speed of the motor 2 stored in the memory. When determining that the head shaft 6 is rotating, the control means causes the motor to rotate at the motor rotation speed optimum for tightening the wood screw, and when determining that the head shaft 6 is not rotating, the control means causes the motor to rotate at the motor rotation speed suitable for tightening the bolt.
