PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rubber composition capable of improving rolling resistance of a tire while maintaining rubber characteristics such as strength and wear resistance, and to provide a pneumatic tire using the rubber composition. SOLUTION: The rubber composition contains a diene rubber as a rubber component, and surface-treated zeolite fine particles. The surface-treating agent is preferably at least one selected from a fatty acid, a resin acid, a quaternary ammonium salt and a lignosulfonic acid salt. Preferably, the amount of the attached surface-treating agent is 0.1-20 wt.% based on the amount of untreated zeolite, and the average particle diameter of the surface-treated zeolite fine particles is≤10μm.
