PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an information recording and reproducing system in which a recording medium can be conveyed between information recording and reproducing systems. SOLUTION: The information recording and reproducing system includes: a medium storage which stores a portable recording medium; a medium drive mechanism recording or reproducing information to/from the portable recording medium, a medium holding mechanism holding the portable recording medium; a medium conveying mechanism conveying the portable recording medium between the medium storage and the medium drive mechanism; a control means controlling operation of the portable conveying mechanism;and connectable information recording and reproducing system unit housings storing the medium storage, the medium drive mechanism, the medium conveying mechanism and the control means. One medium conveying mechanism is prepared for each information recording and reproducing system unit housing. Respective medium conveying mechanism in the connected information recording and reproducing system unit housing delivers the portable recording medium without entering other information recording and reproducing system unit housing.
