PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a reciprocating engine adapted not to add pressing by gas pressure to lateral pressure on a cylinder inner surface on an opposite side from thrust of a piston in an exhaust stroke. SOLUTION: The piston 2 includes a piston upper body 8 comprised of a crown part 3 receiving combustion pressure and a land part 7 having piston ring grooves 4, 5, 6, and a pin boss part 11 supporting a skirt part 9 formed on a lower side of the piston upper body 8 and a piston pin 10. In the piston 2, a first piston ring 17 is installed in the piston ring groove 4 closest to the crown part 3 and a second ring 18 is installed in the piston ring groove 5 next closest to the crown part.
