PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a plate material light in weight and high in strength and rigidity. SOLUTION: A method for lightening a plate material or a structure comprises a process for calculating bending stress by giving a fixing condition and a loading condition to a plate material including a central flat plate 12 and a wall 14 hung from both ends of the central flat plate 12, and a boring process for boring holes 26 in a region where the bending stress is low. Thus, the holes are arranged in a region having low bending stress after being calculated. As a result, the weight of the plate material can be reduced while preventing its strength and rigidity from being reduced by arranging those holes in the region where the bending stress is low.
