<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an assembly method for a process cartridge in which space Ds when an image carrier and a developer carrier are attached can be correctly derived, side plates retaining tool and the process cartridge which is manufactured by using the method and the tool. <P>SOLUTION: The assembly method for the process cartridge is provided with at least four types of members of the image carrier, the developer carrier, a pair of side plates, and a housing retaining the pair of side plates. The pair of side plates has a spacing adjusting mechanism for adjusting the space between the image carrier and the developer carrier. Measuring and adjustment of the space is carried out by the side plates retaining tool which retains at least the three types of members which are the image carrier, the developer carrier and the pair of side plates and the space measuring tool measuring the space.
