PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a heavy-duty pneumatic radial tire capable of improving a traction performance without damaging wear resistance. SOLUTION: The heavy-duty pneumatic radial tire has a tread of either a block pattern or a rib pattern having a land part 1 defined and formed by grooves. The treading side of the land part 1 is provided with at least one closed groove 2 where one end terminates in the land part 1 and the other end passes through an edge extending along a width direction of the tire and opens toward the grooves, the closed groove 2 is formed such that when the land part 1 is a block, its opening width (a) is 0.05 to 0.50 times of the maximum width of the block and in turn when the land part 1 is either a rug or rib, its opening width (a) is 0.05 to 0.50 times of the tread width of the tire, and a peripheral length (b) is 0.05 to 0.60 times of the maximum length of the land extending along an orientation of a rotating tire irrespective of the block, lug and rib.
