The transmission (10) has three planetary gear sets (16, 18, 20) arranged adjacent to respective walls (102-106) within a transmission housing (11). A set of clutches (70-74) interconnects input members (12) and sun gear members (52) of planetary gear sets with planet carrier members of the planetary gear sets. A brake interconnects one of the planet carrier members to the transmission housing. The clutches and the brake are selectively engageable with each other to establish eight forward speed ratios and reverse speed ratio between the input members and the output members.
