PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a broadcast receiver which is not necessary to be set to a sleep mode every time before going to bed, but can be set to the sleep mode at all times. SOLUTION: The broadcast receiver 1 includes: a receiving means 11 for receiving a program to be broadcast and program information; a program information extracting means 12 for extracting the program information; a lightness detecting means 26 for detecting whether ambient lightness is a preset lightness detection reference value ; and a timer time lapse monitoring means 26 for monitoring the lapse of a preset timer time. When it is detected by the lightness detecting means 26 that the surrounding becomes predetermined lightness and the lapse of the timer time is monitored by the timer time lapse monitoring means 26 under viewing a program to which a sleep mode is set, the broadcast receiver 1 is powered off.
