PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an abnormal communication detecting apparatus which detects such abnormal communication that data of same content are repeatedly transmitted, and effectively uses communication resources without attaching data for confirmation or monitoring to transmission data. SOLUTION: The abnormal communication detecting apparatus detects abnormal communication between a plurality of electronic control devices for periodically transmitting/receiving data of a plurality of kinds (n-kinds). One of the plurality of electronic control devices (engine control unit 10) transmits data of a different kind (command CMD) to the other (throttle valve control unit 12) for each communication, and causes the other to generate and to reply a reply data (discrimination code ID) according to the kind of received data. If the reply data that have been received are not generated according to the kind of the transmitted data, abnormal communication is detected to be present (S16 and the like, S44).
