The retractable vehicle roof (3) has two rigid roof sections (5,7), where the former roof section extends from the A- column (6) to the C-column of the vehicle. The latter roof section forms the C-column and surrounds the passenger compartment above a chassis (2). The former roof section is pivoted at two guide pairs (65) and each of the guide pair extends behind a head support (13) of the vehicle seat in the closed condition of the roof. Each guide pair has two guides which are placed in a common level. The level runs transverse to the vehicle longitudinal axis. An independent claim is included for a motor vehicle such as cabriolet with a back rest.
