The motor (1) has a rotor arranged rotatably opposite to a stator (3) together with a motor shaft (7). The shaft is formed as a hollow shaft (8) to form an engine brake unit, and a brake unit (14) is extended into the hollow shaft. The unit is connected with the stator in a torsionally fixed manner, and a rheological fluid (24) e.g. magnetorheological fluid or electrorheological fluid, is provided in an area between an inner wall (11) of the shaft and the unit. A wire wound coil is embedded into a plastic film, and the unit and the shaft are arranged concentrically to each other. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating an electric motor.
