<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide gas sensor which can inhibit any crack appearance on detection element body caused by crack arisen in base end of porous protective layer. <P>SOLUTION: The gas sensor 100 includes main fitting 110 and the detection element body 201 held by this main fitting, the porous protective layer 240 covering tip side of the detection element body 201, and inner protector 161 provided with inside through-hole 167 which directly encloses element nose part 202 protruding from tip of the main fitting on the detection element body 201 to introduce gas to be measured. Among these parts, the porous protective layer 240 consists of covering section 242 and reduced bore section 247 arranged on the base end side rather than the covering section, thickness of which will gradually be tapered as it goes towards the base end side.
