PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a production method by which, even when indium chloride or a metal salt containing indium chloride as a major component is used as a starting raw material, powder containing indium chloride as a major component having a low chlorine grade can be efficiently obtained inexpensively. SOLUTION: Indium chloride is added to a basic aqueous solution in such a manner that the solution temperature is held at <50°C and pH is held at≥8 upon mixing, and also, pH upon the completion of the mixing is controlled to 11 to 14, thereby crystallizing indium hydroxide. The obtained indium hydroxide is dispersed into an ammonia aqueous solution of≥0.08 mol/l to be a suspension. The suspension is held at a solution temperature of 60 to 100°C, and is thereafter filtered to obtain powder, and thereafter, water washing treatment and calcination treatment are performed.
