PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new humidity sensor having high sensitivity, with respect to humidity and superior visibility. SOLUTION: The humidity sensor has a birefringent layer of which retardation changes due to humidity and a means for generating birefringent interference in a light exiting from the birefringent layer and displays humidity, or the humidity range in color. One example has a pair of polarizers (12a and 12b), of which the axes of polarization are perpendicular to each other, and the birefringent layer (10) is arranged between the pair of polarizers.
