PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light source device and its driving method capable of restraining generation of illuminance fluctuation during lighting action at steady power. SOLUTION: A control device 70b is operable with melting drive, and at the melting drive, in some timing during initial operation, volumes of dissolution parts 62, 64 of a first electrode 15 or a second electrode 16 are made to be enlarged than that of the dissolution part of a tip side of the first electrode 15 or the second electrode 16 at the time of rated drive during stationary operation, thus, repair or restoration of an electrode using a period of lighting start-up is enabled to restrain generation of flicker or arc jump. Therefore, without interrupting stationary operation, dissolution volumes of the first electrode 15 or the second electrode 16 are enlarged, so that fluctuation of brightness of a light source light or a projection image can be prevented substantially after the start of the use.
