PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper separation device for a fixing device of an image forming apparatus which, regardless of the temperature of a fixing roller 16, makes a gap between the surface of the fixing roller 16 and the leading end 203 of a paper separation member 20 substantially constant all the time, thereby preventing image failure caused by scratch resulting from the contact of the paper separation member 20 with the fixing roller 16, consequently materializes energy saving by shortening of warm-up and improvement in durability without increasing space and cost. SOLUTION: The paper separation member 20 is configured to be turnable around a shaft 201. A member 21 for adjusting an interval between the fixing roller side leading end 203 and the fixing roller 16 is provided. The interval adjusting member 21 turns the paper separation member 20 in direction for separating the leading end 203 of the member 20 from the fixing roller 16 by the expansion of the member 21 from the heat of the fixing roller 16. In addition, the interval adjusting member 21 is formed from a member that makes the lengthwise thermal expansion of the interval adjusting member 21 substantially equal to the diametrically thermal expansion of the fixing roller 16.
